As a famous expression goes, “Home is where the heart is.” The saying conveys that despite a person’s current place of residence, their “true” home is the location that holds the strongest emotional connection for them. Notice, though, that the expression is not, “A house is where the heart is.” That’s because the words “house” and “home” are not entirely the same. A home can be anywhere a person lives—a house, an apartment, or even a boat or a car (if one lives and sleeps in a vehicle). So, when we examine the history of human accommodations, it’s important to make a distinction between the first homes and the original houses. Even with this belief as a guideline, however, there is still considerable debate.
