For centuries, fiction authors have often chosen to conceal their true identities and use fake names on the published versions of their works. Such fake names are known as pseudonyms.
The use of pseudonyms by authors is nothing new. In the 19th century, for example, it was not uncommon for female authors to publish their works using male names so that their novels would be taken more seriously by the public. One famous example of this phenomenon is the 19th-century novel Middlemarch, which is generally considered a classic of modern literature. Middlemarch was written by a woman named Mary Ann Evans, who adopted the male pen name George Eliot to publish the book. The novel’s subsequent popularity suggests that this decision was indeed effective.
