Pickleball has recently become the talk of the town. It’s a sport that looks like a cross between tennis and ping-pong. People of all ages play it, and it’s growing more and more in __1__. But when did this sport first come about?
Pickleball started in 1965, when Joel Pritchard and his friend went back to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, after a long day of golf. He saw that his kids were bored and wanted to play a game of badminton with them. The only problem was that they couldn’t find the shuttlecock. So instead, they __2__ a Wiffle ball—a plastic ball with holes in it commonly used by children to play baseball. They also used ping-pong paddles instead of badminton rackets. Pritchard’s wife, Joan Pritchard, saw what they were playing and called it “pickleball” since it reminded her of a “Pickle boat,” which is the boat made up of oarsmen chosen from the leftover rowers in the sport of rowing.
