Devastating Floods Ravage Pakistan
Starting in June of last year, Pakistan has experienced some of the worst floods in recent years. The catastrophic floods have killed over 1,500 people and, at one point, left a third of the country submerged in water. Heavy rain from seasonal monsoons is not new to Pakistan, but last year has produced three and a half times more rainfall than normal.
While many have assumed that the disaster is a result of climate change, the answer is much more complicated. Scientists said climate change is certainly exacerbating extreme weather, but Pakistan’s overall vulnerability may also play a crucial role. The local economy and society, as well as faulty infrastructure, can be factors in the unprecedented floods.
