In the last century, our planet’s population has quadrupled, from two to eight billion, and we’re expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. With growing crowds comes an increased demand for food. __1__ In some countries, there simply space, and thus more creative solutions are called for to address this pressing problem. One such solution is the Netherlands’ floating farm.

In Merwehaven, or Merwe Port, a 1,200-square-meter farm floats on the surface of the water. Merwehaven is connected to the Nieuwe Maas river, a branch of the Rhine—the second longest river in Western Europe. The port is technically located within Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, and the city center is only a few kilometers upstream. Due to the geographical convenience of the port, a creative idea regarding farming on the water was put into practice. __2__ Next to the farm is a small plot of land where the farm’s 40 cows can stroll or graze. The farm manufactures milk and dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and butter, as well as fertilizer for agriculture.
