Some ingredients in the culinary world are undoubtedly more valuable and harder to find than others, and there are a number of reasons for this. Today, we look at two of the most prized ingredients around the world and explain why they’re so sought after.
Have you ever been served rice that is tinged with a shiny yellow color? If so, your rice may have been cooked with saffron. Saffron is a spice that is referred to by many as “red gold” because of how valuable it is. In fact, real saffron costs over US$10,000 per kilogram, which has established its position as the most expensive spice. The reason for this is that saffron comes from the flower of a certain type of crocus plant. These plants flower for only a couple of weeks every year, and thus the annual saffron-harvesting season is incredibly short. In addition, each flower contains so little saffron that it takes at least 150,000 flowers to produce just a single kilogram of red gold.
