In 2016, Google worker Daniel Patt visited the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland. On the walls were many black-and-white photos, but only a handful ofthem had names. They were the Jewish victims of the Holocaust killed by Nazi Germany during World War II. __1__ Patt lived in New York, but his ancestors were Jews fromPoland. In fact, three of his grandparents survived the tragedy, and they certainly wanted to find members of their family that were slaughtered.
__2__ He set up a platform called From Numbers to Names (N2N), which uses AI to recognize faces in photos and connectthem totheir living family members. He hopes that this platform helps not only his grandparents but also those who are in search of theirrelatives who died in the Holocaust. Although he started from scratchon his own, he was later joined by more engineers and experts. The scale of the project soon expanded and reached people from around the world.
