It seems that once the summer months roll around each year, the news is suddenly packed with headlines about deadly extreme weather events. 2023 has been no exception to this trend. Multiple severe weather conditions have wreaked havoc across the Northern Hemisphere. Europe has experienced intense heat waves that have resulted in fatalities, while torrential downpours in South Korea have caused dangerous landslides and flash floods around the country.
Parts of France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece have all experienced extreme heat waves, with temperatures soaring well above 40°C in July. On the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily, temperatures reached near the European record high of 48.8°C. In Greece, major tourist attractions had to be shut down when temperatures peaked during the middle of the day to prevent tourists from getting heatstroke or other heat-related conditions. Even places in central parts of Europe that are known for having mild summers, like Germany and Poland, have seen temperatures rise far beyond the norm during this time of year.
