Joseph Dituri, an associate professor at the University of South Florida, recently broke the record for the longest length of time spent living underwater. On March 1, 2023, Dituri __1__ in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, a steel-and- glass hotel situated nine meters below the surface of a lagoon in Key Largo, Florida. When he emerged on June 9, he had spent 100 days underwater, surpassing the previous record of 73 days set in 2014 at the same location.
Dituri, a 55-year-old biomedical engineer and former navy diver, __2__ his feat as part of a research project organized by the Marine Resources Development Foundation. The project aimed to study the physiological and psychological effects of compression on the human body, and it revealed that Dituri’s height had decreased over a centimeter during the 14-week period. Dituri also wanted to test his __3__ that living in an environment of higher pressure could help people live longer and possibly prevent age-related illnesses. Moreover, he hoped his underwater research would benefit the treatment of a variety of illnesses, such as traumatic brain injuries.
