For kids and adults alike, reindeer stir the imagination, not only with their huge antlers , which can grow up to 1.5 meters in length, but also because of their close connection with Christmas and Santa Claus. Kids who discover the truth about the jolly old fellow from the North Pole may be forgiven for assuming that reindeer, too, are the stuff of legend and myths. While these animals’ flying version that carries Santa’s sleigh may be fictional , their down-to-earth counterparts are very real.
Reindeer, which are native to the Arctic region, are known for their ability to survive in harsh winter conditions, with a coat of thick fur keeping them warm and hooves adapted for walking on snow and ice. Interestingly, another of the animal’s adaptations lends credibility to the most famous reindeer of all—Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Some species of reindeer have 25 percent more capillaries carrying red, oxygen-rich blood in their noses than humans. This increases the level of blood flow and also gives their noses a red tinge .
