Scientists have recently discovered a speciesof mice living close to the top of Llullaillaco, a volcanoon the border between Chile and Argentina. Living at an altitude of just over 6,700 meters, the leaf-eared mice are now considered the highest-dwelling vertebratespecies.
Scientists initiallyassumed that this environment would be too difficult to support animal life because oxygenlevels are only about 40% of those at sea level, and temperatures regularly drop far below zero degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the mice were found 650 meters above the volcano's vegetationline, leading researchers to wonder about their food supply. Therefore, when the first mouse was discovered near the peak, scientists assumed it might have accidentallyhitchhikedwith local people traveling through the area. Subsequentfindings of other mice in the regionclarified that these rodentswere notaccidentalvisitors, but rather were thrivingin this extreme environment.
