Eye color is one of the most distinctive traits that make each person unique. It is determined by the genes we inherit and the amount of melanin in the iris, the colored front layer of our eyes. Melanin doesn’t just make our skin darker—it also adds depth and color to our eyes. People with more melanin typically have brown eyes, while those with less melanin may have blue, green, or gray eyes. Different combinations of genes affect melanin levels and distribution, resulting in the spectrum of eye colors we see.
