Facebook, Inc. has been rebranded as Meta Platforms, Inc. Announcing the name change at the company’s annual conference on October 28, 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined a new direction for the corporation. He aims to broaden the company's scope beyond social media and into the realm of virtual reality.
“Meta” is the Greek word for “beyond,”but it also alludes to the metaverse. This is the term for a virtual world where users will be able to connect with and immerse themselves in multiple digital environments via a headset. This technology is in its infancy, but Zuckerberg believes
the time is right to “adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do.” Meta’s individual platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, will retain their separate names and identities.
