References to the color blue are also common in the English language. There are many expressions that include the word blue. The word blue can be used to describe someone’s mood. If someone is feeling “blue,” that means they are feeling sad. If someone is going through a “blue period,” that means they have been sad or unhappy for a long time. We could also say that someone who is sad has “the blues.”
Blue can also be used to talk about something that doesn’t happen often. For example, if you don’t see someone very often, you can say that you see them “once in a blue moon.” Or, if something unexpected happens, we can say it happens “out of the blue.”
But blue isn’t always negative. If someone is “true-blue,” then they firmly support something and are very reliable. A true-blue friend is someone who will always be there when you need them. Blue can also mean that something is the best. For certain contests, the winner is given a blue ribbon. So, when someone does an excellent job, we can say they deserve a “blue ribbon.”
