Dancing is part of human nature that has been evolving from the beginning of human history. New dance moves pop up all the time. In the 20th century, new styles of music such as jazz inspired dancers to move in new ways. In the 1920s, the Charleston was all the rage. Jazz then underwent changes over the next two decades, spawning new dance styles that were collectively referred to as swing dancing.
Previously, most Western dances involved partners holding each other. Think of the waltz, which predated swing dancing, and you get the picture. The fast and intense rhythm of swing jazz, however, introduced breakaway as well as swingout, the releasing of contact between partners. Dozens of dances with creative names like the Jitterbug, the Balboa, and the Lindy Hop arose. The Lindy Hop probably developed from the earlier Charleston and quickly became the most popular of the swing dances.
