Lois Lowry was born in Hawaii in the late 1930s. Because her father was in the military, her family moved a lot when she was a child. In the 1970s, she finished her university degree and began her writing career. She published her first novel, A Summer to Die, in 1977. From then on, she has written many books for young adults and has won two Newbery Medals. The Newbery Medal is an annual award that recognizes excellence in children’s books.
All of Lowry’s books explore challenging issues like death, illness, injustice, and fear. Due to their mature themes, many of her books have been banned from schools. However, many other schools recognize the importance of the topics she brings up and have made some of her books must-reads for their students. When she published The Giver in 1993, it was very rare for children’s authors to write about such intense topics.
