Lois Lowry’s book, The Giver , was first published in the United States in 1993. The story is a work of dystopian fiction for children. The word dystopian is used to describe an unfair society filled with great suffering.
The main character of the story is a 12-year-old boy named Jonas, who lives in a community of Sameness. In this community, there is no diversity, color, or climate. There is no pain, but also no joy. Everyone is equal, and everyone is the same. In this society, all children are assigned their life’s work at age 12. When Jonas attends the ceremony to learn his fate, he is given the unique position of Receiver of Memory.
