Loy Krathong is Thailand’s celebration of the water goddess.
Water is a valuable resource, and it plays an important role in Thailand’s traditions, beliefs, and daily life. A festival called Loy Krathong is celebrated in the country every year to honor Thailand’s goddess of water. The purpose of this holiday is to give thanks to the goddess and also ask for her forgiveness for polluting or wasting the water.
There are many theories about the origins of the festival. A common one says that Nang Noppamas, a woman living in the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th or 14th century, started the tradition. She designed a beautiful floating basket shaped like a lotus to worship the Buddha, and this basket became the basis of Loy Krathong. The date for the holiday changes every year, depending on the cycle of the moon, but it usually falls in November. This year, it will take place on November 28.

Loy Krathong is celebrated everywhere in Thailand. In Bangkok, many activities for Loy Krathong are held along the Chao Phraya River. Chiang Mai in northern Thailand has its own festival called the Yi Peng Lantern Festival. It usually occurs at the same time as Loy Krathong. Neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia also have similar holidays.
