Loy Krathong, one of the most beautiful festivals in Thailand, celebrates the end of the rainy season and shows respect to the goddess of water. In English, loy means “float” and krathong means “basket.” These two words are related to the main activity of the festival. During Loy Krathong, people make small baskets made of bananaleavesandshapedlikelotusflowers. Then, they are decorated with candles and incense and cast off to float down a river. It is believed that making krathongs and releasing them into a river helps get rid of the bad energy from the previous year.
When the krathong is released, people also make a wish for the future. Loy Krathong is a very romantic holiday and is often regarded as Thailand’s Valentine’s Day. All of the candles floating on the river create a beautiful atmosphere. Couples like to release their krathongs together, and if the krathongs continue to float side by side, it is considered a good sign that the couple will stay together.
