A place filled with memories
Avanos, a town in Turkey, is historically known for its production of pottery. However, it has become famous in recent years for a special reason—The Hair Museum of Avanos. Set up in 1979 by a local potter named Galip, this museum is located under his pottery shop, Chez Galip.
It began when a female friend of Galip was leaving to return to her home country. This saddened him so deeply that the woman cut off a piece of her own hair for him to keep as a memento. Many women who have visited his shop and heard the story have since given him some of their hair along with their names and addresses. Eventually, the museum became filled with locks of hair donated by female visitors from around the world.
Over the years, Galip has collected over 16,000 samples of hair. The walls, ceiling, and all other surfaces, except for the floor, are covered with locks of hair from different women. The Hair Museum of Avanos entered the Guinness World Records in 1998. The museum’s record seems secure, as women continue to donate their hair to this one-of-a-kind museum.
