Buffet restaurants are widely popular because they allow customers to try lots of tasty dishes at a fixed cost. The modern buffet has its roots in a traditional Swedish practice where appetizers—such as bread, butter, and cheese—and drinks were served before the main meal. Over time, this pre-dinner snack evolved into a full meal that consisted of cold and warm dishes. Eventually, it spread beyond Sweden and became popular across Europe.
