take (sth) with a grain of salt (對某事)半信半疑,採保留的態度
例:The fortune teller predicted that Covid-19 will come to an end in June, but I took that with a grain of salt.
(這名算命師預言新冠肺炎會在今年六月結束,但我對那個說法採保留態度。)例:The flatterer’s words should always be taken with a grain of salt.
(諂媚者的話不應該太信以為真。)A: John just told me he got admitted to Harvard.
B: You should take everything he says with a grain of salt. He sometimes tells lies.(A: 約翰剛告訴我他獲准到哈佛大學唸書了。)

the salt of the earth 正派的人,誠實善良的人(此用法源自聖經)
例:I’d say Kelly is the salt of the earth. She’s always willing to help people in need.
(我認為凱莉很正直、善良。她總是樂於幫助窮困的人。)
to rub salt in / into the wound 在傷口上撒鹽,雪上加霜
= to add insult to injury例:Gina was badly hurt in a car accident, and to rub salt in the wound, her boyfriend dumped her.

吉娜在一起車禍中受重傷,然後更雪上加霜的是,她被男友甩了。A: What you said to Sue was like rubbing salt into her wounds.
