In the past, when companies wanted to sell their products, they would find big celebrities. Then, they would pay these stars a lot of money to advertise for them. Things are different today, as many companies are turning to bloggers and so-called social media influencers instead. That’s because these online celebrities have millions of followers who pay close attention to everything they say.
Many kids today dream about becoming social media influencers or YouTubers when they grow up. For many young people, it seems like a dream job. Influencers usually don’t have a boss, and they get to work from home. Every day, they spend time making videos and taking photographs to share with their followers. Influencers enjoy starting conversations about topics that they really care about.
Influencers with millions of followers can become very powerful. Their followers trust whatever they say and often look to them for guidance. For example, when young girls see a beautiful model on Instagram, they want to use the same makeup so they can look like her. In one study, 40% of people said they bought at least one product after seeing an influencer use it.
