On January 15, 2022, a large volcanic eruption occurred near the small island country of Tonga. It is the largest eruption that has taken place in the 21st century so far. Scientists have estimated that ash from the explosion traveled as high as 55 kilometers up in the atmosphere. Ash clouds over the nearby main island of Tonga were so dense that they blocked out the sun for an extended period of time. People in places as far away as New Zealand and even Alaska reported hearing sounds of the explosion. The aftermath of the eruption caused tsunami waves to hit many areas around the Pacific Ocean. While many houses were destroyed on some islands near the eruption site, there have fortunately been only three deaths recorded.
