Taiwan is continuing to make efforts to reduce the use of single-use utensils and containers in its food industry. In December 2021, Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) announced that polystyrene cups will be banned from store shelves and restaurants starting in July 2022. In addition to polystyrene cups, the EPA is also asking local governments to expandtheban to other types of single-use cups, such as those made of plastic.
The new regulations will also encourage the use ofreusable cups in stores by forcing businesses to give at least a NT$5 discount to customers who carry their own cups. As of July 2022, the only single-use disposable cups that businesses will be permitted to provide free of charge must be made of paper or other plant materials.
