The World’s Largest Carbon Removal Plant Opens in Iceland
In May 2024, Swiss company Climeworks opened the world’s largest direct air capture plant in Iceland. The plant is named Mammoth and is 10 times larger than the company’s previous plant. Powered by renewable energy, Mammoth uses fans to capture air. A filter inside the collector then traps the CO2 in the air. With the help of another company called Carbfix, the CO2 is then dissolved in water and pumped underground, where it reacts with basalt rocks to turn into stone.
Mammoth is designed to capture 36,000 tons of CO2 per year. Climeworks hopes to put the plant at full capacity by the end of the year. The company’s CEO emphasizes the pressing need for development in this field to deal with climate change. He hopes that projects like Mammoth can help address the challenge of reducing carbon emissions.
