1. 基本的對等連接詞有三個：and, or, but。此類連接詞可連接對等的單字、片語或子句。
a. 單字：
例: Paul(主詞) and I(主詞) enjoy singing.
（阿寶跟我都喜歡唱歌。）
David is kind(形容詞) and handsome(形容詞).
（大衛心地好，人又帥。）
Is John nice(形容詞) or bad(形容詞)?
（阿強是好人還是壞人？）
Jack doesn't love(動詞) me but hates(動詞) me.
（傑克並不愛我，而是恨我。）b. 片語：
例: I came to see John and (to) tell him the truth.
（我來是要看阿強並把真相告訴他。）
I came not to see Paul but to see Mary.
（我來並不是要見阿寶，而是要見瑪麗。）
Does David work in Taipei or in Tainan?
（大衛是在台北還是在台南工作？）c. 子句：
例: My son works hard(主要子句), and I'm proud of him(主要子句).
（我兒子很努力，我也以他為榮。）
Paul failed not because he was sick(副詞子句) but because he was lazy(副詞子句).
（阿寶失敗並非因為他生病，而是因為他懶。）
