Jet Grandma Soars to Gold at Age 88
Earning the nickname “Jet Grandma,” 88-year-old Show-Yu Lin Pon stunned the crowd at the 2025 World Masters Games as she sprinted to victory in the women’s 100-meter race, clocking in at an impressive 27.10 seconds to claim the gold medal at Taipei Stadium.
Lin Pon stepped away from athletics aged 22 after getting married, but made an inspiring comeback at 63 years of age when her passion for running was reignited. In the two decades since her return, she has competed in numerous senior sporting events in Taiwan and around the world.
In recent years, Lin has faced a series of health setbacks, including a serious leg injury that forced her to take a three-year break from competition. Many believed her racing days were over, but with unshakable determination and a deep love for the sport, she recovered and returned to the track she had never stopped dreaming about.
“I just love running. My goal is to keep going until I’m 100,” she said with a bright smile.
Her unwavering spirit paid off. Against all odds, she didn’t just return—she won. Her story is a testament to resilience and proves that while the body may age, passion keeps us moving forward.
At the award ceremony, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-An presented her with her winner’s medal and joined her for a celebratory photo, capturing a powerful moment of perseverance, joy, and triumph.
Off the track, Lin Pon is also an avid mountaineer. She is among the oldest Taiwanese climbers to have successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak—further cementing her status as a living legend.
Her journey is a timeless reminder:
"Age is just a number. With health, heart, and hope, anything is possible."
