YouTube Introduces New Policy to Label AI-Generated Content
In March 2024, YouTube began requiring content creators to label videos that contain material generated by AI programs. A checklist will appear when a creator uploads a video, asking whether the video includes synthetic content. This policy aims to make sure that AI-generated content won’t mislead or confuse viewers. Such videos will be marked with a label that says “altered or synthetic content.” Videos covering sensitive topics like politics will have the label shown clearly on the video screen.
However, labeling won’t be necessary if the video’s synthetic content is obviously unrealistic, like animation, or unimportant, such as AI-generated lighting or color adjustments. Creators who regularly fail to add the label when required may have their videos removed or be suspended from YouTube’s Partner Program.
