In the years closely preceding the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new global professional trend known as “digital nomadism” appeared. One way to define digital nomads could be to call them people who combine work and travel into a lifestyle. Based on this definition, you may picture a digital nomad as someone lying on a deck chair in the sunshine with a notebook computer on their lap engaged in some form of professional duty. Additionally, it may be tempting to think that all digital nomads are freelancers, or “gig workers.” However, as we continue to find ourselves mired in the global health crisis known as the COVID-19 pandemic, digital nomadism has become more prevalent than ever.
One phenomenon resulting from the pandemic is that more people are now working from home than ever before. This new trend demonstrates that remote work is not only possible in many professional fields but also more convenient and comfortable for many workers. Moreover, the fact that companies like Airbnb are offering longterm rentals in remote locations means it is now easy to take long-term working vacations in quiet, secluded parts of the world.
Of course, digital nomadism is better suited to some industries than others. For example, people who work in IT, marketing, or consultancy likely find it easier to conduct their business online than those in the hospitality industry. Nevertheless, experts are predicting a rise in digital nomadism in the near future among both freelancers and fulltime employees. In summary, the world is on the verge of an exciting time for anyone hoping to earn a living away from the office.
