Stingrays strike both a sense of wonder and fear in humans. These fascinating creatures have been swimming in oceans for over 150 million years, which means they existed during the Late Jurassic period, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. Currently, there are about 220 different species of stingrays on the planet, with more than 25 species endangered.
Stingrays are commonly found in the shallow coastal waters of temperate seas. While the venom in the stingers, or barbs, on their long tails is for a form of self-defense, these sea creatures are usually non-aggressive. However, swimmers and divers can get stung by accidentally stepping on them. Although most injuries are not severe, immense pain or even death can result.
