Basilisk lizards are found throughout tropical areas of Central and South America. Most of the four known species display green or brown coloration, while some also exhibit vibrant blue or red splashes . These lizards can grow to be 70 centimeters in length as adults, but their long, thin tails account for about two-thirds of their total size.
While basilisks have many interesting traits, they are best known for being able to walk on water. Actually, it’s more like running. Nevertheless, basilisks have no problems at all moving across the surface of a lake or stream on their rear legs, a feat that is nearly impossible for most animals. Therefore, it’s not surprising that they are also known as Jesus Lizards, which recalls the biblical story of Jesus walking on water.
