Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city, is best known for its status as the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen, who lived from 1805 to 1875, was the author of many literary works, including poems, travel books, and plays. However, many of these works are primarily known to Danish audiences. It is another form of story that made Hans Christian Andersen a household name around the globe today: fairy tales.
Andersen was a prolific fairy-tale writer, having penned more than 150 such stories throughout his career. Most of us have likely read or been told at least one of his fairy tales, such as Thumbelina and The Little Mermaid, which have been made into successful film adaptations produced by Warner Bros. and Disney, respectively.
