Located on the Danish island of Funen, Odense is truly a hidden gem for travelers. While not a conventional tourist destination, Odense, one of northern Europe’s most colorful cities, offers a unique mixture of history and culture that should earn it a place on any tourist’s bucket list.
Although the history of Odense dates back to before the Middle Ages, the earliest records of the city are from around the turn of the 10th to 11th centuries. In the year 1086, King Canute IV of Denmark was murdered in St. Alban’s Church, a place that still stands in Odense to this day. Following Canute’s death, he was canonized in 1101 and became Denmark’s patron saint, which made Odense a popular place for religious pilgrimages. By the 16th century, Odense was beginning to thrive as a center of trade and manufacturing, a status it still maintains today.
