Snakes are often feared for their venom, but not all species are venomous. Out of over 3,000 species of snakes, only about 450 produce venom. These snakes inject toxins into their prey through hollow fangs, which are capable of piercing skin. A venomous bite can be deadly. As many as 100,000 people die from snakebites every year. However, over the past few decades, scientists have used snake venom to develop antivenom and other medical treatments, saving countless lives in the process.
