As Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” For many, this rings true. We might paint, write, or play an instrument as kids. However, as adults, we find that responsibilities stand in the way of being creative. But is being creative really all that important?
The short answer to this question is: yes. According to studies, being creative in any way can help fight against negative emotions. It helps build problem-solving skills, and increases productivity and confidence. Above all, it also helps people express themselves. One study in Scientific American even found that creative people live longer because their brains are more active.
Next comes the really big question: how can you become more creative? Try taking a child’s approach. Pull out a notebook or a piece of paper and just draw or paint, with no goal in mind. This gets all kinds of connections in the brain working. Or you can get some exercise. A study at Albion College actually discovered that a tired mind can be a more creative mind. So, hit the gym, go for a run, and then sit down to try something new.
