2.Greenpeace Finds Microplastics in Taiwan’s Jiaming Lake
Jiaming Lake, located in Taitung County, is Taiwan’s second-highest mountain lake. In an inspection of high-elevation water sources in the region, the environmental group Greenpeace discovered microplastics. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are less than five millimeters in diameter. They enter the water supply through plastic pollution that humans throw into the ocean and rivers.
Greenpeace’s study determined that the microplastics in Jiaming Lake present a long-term health problem for the local population of sambar deer that drink from the lake and from nearby streams. The group said that more studies will be carried out to measure the environmental impact of microplastics in high-elevation ecosystems. It also reminded people how important it is to properly deal with plastic waste.
