Unfortunately, there are parts of the world where seals are constantly under threat . In eastern Canada, an annual seal hunt is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of these creatures every year. Harp seals are prized for their fur. Sadly, the ones that are easiest to catch on the open sea are the newborn babies.
Many activists, artists, and celebrities have spoken out against the Canadian seal hunt because it is seen as extremely cruel. The baby seals are chased down by hunters holding large wooden clubs. They are then struck violently over the head. Hunters also shoot at seals from their boats, but because skins are worth less with bullet holes in them, using clubs is the preferred killing method.
