    Many crossword puzzles use black-andwhite boxes to show people where to write the words. They are usually set up in a grid, with 15 squares by 15 squares. This is called a blocked grid. In a typical puzzle, the clues provided are often definitions of the words. If the clues for the crossword puzzle are word puzzles themselves, it is a cryptic crossword. It can take a long time for players to figure out the answers to these challenging crossword puzzles.

　In addition to the classic blocked grid,there is also the barred grid. In this puzzle,only white squares are present, with thick,black lines to show where one word ends and another word begins. Some think solving the words in a barred grid is easier because many of them share letters with each other.
