R:   I don’t have a penny to my name. I’m completely broke now.

S:   I can lend you some money.

R:   That would be great, but I can’t pay you back for a while.

S:     Don’t worry about it. Just think of it as a gift.

 

not have a penny to one’s name

penny [ˋpɛnɪ] 指「一分錢」，to oneʼs name 表示「屬於某人名下所有的」。一個人身上連一毛錢都沒有，也就是窮到「身無分文」的意思，也可說成 not have a cent to one’s name。

•   Andy’s company went bankrupt. He does not have a penny to his name now.
安迪的公司破產了。他現在身無分文。

 

以下補充幾個與 name 相關的片語：

oneʼs name is mud　　某人聲名狼藉
mud [mʌd] 指「泥巴」，因此 oneʼs name is mud 的字面意思為「某人的名聲如泥巴般骯髒」，也就是「某人聲名狼藉」的意思。
•   Kevin’s name is mud. No one will lend him money now.\
凱文聲名狼藉。現在沒人願意借錢給他了。

in name alone / only　　名義上的，有名無實的

•   When David is angry, he tends to call other people names.

•   They decorated the Christmas tree with lights, presents, and stockings.

•   I’m broke and cannot pay the rent.
