South Korea is one place where the blood type personality theory is especially popular. In fact, a Gallup Korea study released in 2017 suggests that nearly 60% of all adults in the country believe that blood types serve as an indicator of a person’s personality traits. Even those that don’t agree with the concept are likely familiar with the idea. There are a number of books available that outline the theory. On Facebook, people in South Korea have the option of displaying their blood type on their profile among other personal information. There are even K-pop songs written about blood types, including Type B Men from Kim Hyun-jung and Life Theatre—Type A by Psy.
The blood type personality theory may seem like a fun way to evaluate personalities, but it can also cause discrimination. In the above-mentioned Gallup Korea study, roughly half of the respondents said that they like people with type-O blood the best. Meanwhile, only 6% of those surveyed said they like people with type-AB blood. The general consensus was that type-O individuals have a personality that best fits the collectivistic culture found in Korea, while AB-types, known for being individualistic, don’t suit such a cultural outlook.
Some of these negative biases linked to the blood personality theory have led to a rise in discrimination cases and complaints. As a result, in recent years, many media outlets have stopped promoting the theory. There has even been an increase in documentaries working to disprove the theory.
