It’s no secret that people love pets. The popularity of videos of cute animals on social media bears witness to this. While there are dozens of different animals that can be raised as pets, the two most common ones are cats and dogs. Over the millennia, cats and dogs have both proven to be very beneficial to humans as protectors and companions.

Humans began to domesticate cats thousands of years ago. Throughout history, cats have hunted rodents and other small animals that spread disease or threaten crops. That’s how they earned their reputation as protective animals and as a source of good luck. Today, people celebrate their feline friends each year on International Cat Day, which falls on August 8. The holiday was introduced by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002. It was created to show appreciation for the companionship that cats provide for billions of people.
