This is another reference to the common practice of gift-giving during the Christmas holidays. In this instance, this phrase suggests that the size of the present doesn’t matter. Of course, this can be taken literally and refer to the fact that some very luxurious gifts are quite small, like jewelry. However, people often use the phrase to imply being happy with the gifts one receives no matter how big or small. It is the thought behind the present that truly matters, not how much money someone put into the gift they gave you.
