The present monarch of the UK is King Charles III, but he only recently ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth had a remarkable reign, serving from 1952 to 2022, and it will probably take a longtime for many people not to think of her when it comes to the British monarchy.
Elizabeth had an extraordinary life. She is the longest-reigning British monarch, but that path was not expected ofher from the beginning. Born in 1926, Elizabeth was the eldest child of the Duke of York (later King George VI). The Duke was second in line to the throne behind his older brother Edward and was not expected to become king. However, shortly after King Edward VIII came to the throne in 1936, he abdicatedlater that year, giving the crown to his brother, which in turn made Elizabeth the next heir.
