running指「賽跑;競賽」，be out of the running 字 面上的意思是「沒有參加比賽」，引申有「淘汰出局」或「沒有 勝算」之意。
• He was out of the running for first prize due to his nervousness.
=He didn’t stand a chance of winning first prize due to his nervousness.
緊張使得他沒機會得第一。
與 be out of the running 相反的就是 be in the running，意思 是「有獲勝的希望」。
• They are both in the running for the championship.
= They both stand a chance of winning the championship.
他們倆都有希望贏得冠軍。
