The Environmental Impact of AI
As more and more people adopt AI tools like ChatGPT, questions have been raised about the environmental impact of this technology. Currently, very little data is available regarding the resource demands of AI. However, one study conducted by researchers at two American universities has shed some light on the amount of water required. The researchers discovered that an estimated 700,000 liters of fresh water was needed to train GPT-3. Furthermore, ChatGPT requires 500 milliliters of water for every 20 to 50 questions.
Data centers located in large warehouses are needed to house the many computational servers used to host programs like ChatGPT. These centers need large amounts of energy to run and can produce excessive amounts of heat. Thus, water is used for cooling.
In light of these findings, it is becoming increasingly evident that as AI technology continues to advance and gain wider adoption, its environmental impact should be a central consideration.
