The hoop skirt’s earliest form, known as the farthingale, was intended to give a woman’s outfit a cone-like shape. Made from whalebone or cane sewn into fabric, the farthingale spread from Spain around 1545 to the rest of Europe and persisted in most European courts until 1620 with variations. One of these variations was the French farthingale, which was often tilted upward at the back with the assistance of a padded pillow to give the illusion of a longer torso. Meanwhile, the Italian farthingale was a smaller and more delicate version that sat evenly at the hips.
