With the rising awareness of environmental protection among global consumers, various countries have implemented policies and actions in relation to sustainable consumption. France introduced the Repairability Index in 2021, mandating that consumer electronic products be labeled with a repairability score—the higher the score, the easier the product is to repair. In 2024, the European Parliament passed the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), requiring products sold in the EU to comply with requirements related to repairability, reusability, reliability, and recyclability.
Following these international trends, the Resource Circulation Administration (RECA), established by Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment, has launched a series of strategies aimed at extending product lifespan, such as collaborating with local governments to set up repair stations. In 2023, RECA piloted the Repairability Index, initially targeting electronic products, and worked with numerous manufacturers of laptops, mobile phones, and tablets to develop Taiwan’s own evaluation indicator. Future legislative efforts will promote mandatory repairability assessmentsconducted by producers and provide consumers with necessary information disclosures. It is hoped that all of these measures will help consumers choose products aligning with green design concepts, extend product lifespans, reduce waste production, and make sustainable consumption the norm.
