The iconic image of a hippo is surely that of the top part of its head emerging from the water. Hippos, like other mammals, cannot breathe underwater. They depend on the nostrils on the top of their snouts, the parts of their faces that stick out, to breathe while their body is underwater. Impressively, they can hold their breath for up to five minutes, long enough for animals that live in shallow waters. Thanks to their well-developed lungs, hippos can take in large volumes of air and efficiently store oxygen in their body tissues. This special ability allows them to stay underwater for extended periods for protection from both the sun and predators. However, this breath-holding ability is arguably not the animal’s most striking characteristic.
