The Greek Freak’s road from poverty to NBA superstardom
Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the best basketball players in the world. The 2.11-meter giant plays power forward for the Milwaukee Bucks and has amazing athletic skills for his size. Nicknamed the “Greek Freak,” Giannis has won an NBA championship and two MVP Awards, and has been selected for the All-Star Team six times. Although he’s sitting on top of the world, Giannis had to overcome a lot to become the star he is today.
Giannis was born in Athens, Greece, on December 6, 1994. His parents moved there from Nigeria illegally, so he wasn’t allowed to become a Greek citizen. Since he was born overseas, Giannis wasn’t able to get Nigerian citizenship, either. For the first 18 years of his life, he wasn’t an official citizen of any country.
